With Spring right around the corner my mind starts to drift to spring cleaning and organizing. One of the places that I always try to keep organized and clean is my closet. After all for a fashion addict this is the most important room in the house.
So here are some of my tips and tricks to an organized closet. These tips work for a closet of any size and can be done on a very small budget.
First I'm sure you noticed those large white hanging shelves on the right side of my closet you can purchase these from Target for around $10 each. I use these shelves to hold my cardigans, hats and bags. I keep my sweaters and cardigans here because I don't want to stretch them out by hanging them up and I don't want to put them in a drawer because then I'll forget to wear them. After all I'm sure you've heard the saying "If you can't see it you won't wear it." This is the same reason why I also store my purses on these shelves. Plus it's also a convenient place to put my hats. Special note that green hat that you can see in the picture below was worn by my grandfather in the Korean War.
Next on to my shoes. I store my boots on the floor mainly because they just don't fit any where else. For my tall boots I put cut up pool noodles inside them to keep them from falling over. I line my shorter boots and booties up on the other side of my closet under my dresses. For the rest of my shoes I have three hanging shoe holders that you can get from Target for about $8 (yes 3, I know that's a lot of shoes.)
Next on to my clothing. For my pants and jeans I separate the jeans and casual pants from my work appropriate pants to make it easier for me to get dressed in the mornings.
I separate my tops first by sleeve length then by color.
I also separate my dresses by color. But in the past I have also tried organizing them by occasion or work appropriateness.
My jackets are just all together they aren't organized in any other way.
My 3/4 and long sleeve tops are not organized by color but instead by fabric. I separate them into knits, chiffon type fabrics, lace, button down, and finally flannel.
I also have my skirts separated from my shorts.
Now for the quick tips and tricks section!
One quick trick that is easy to pull off and can make any closet look organized even if it isn't really is having all matching clothes hangers. I like these velvet ones that I got at Home Goods but there are cheaper hangers out there that you can buy that will do the trick.
Next make sure the items on your shelves are neat and orderly. Fold your blankets and similar items neatly to give your closet a polished look.
Your closet will look ten times more organized with less stuff stacked on top of each other. High stacks of boxes or other items just look messy. A good general rule that I follow is no more than two boxes stacked on top of each other.
Another quick tip is to have a spot to hang your empty hangers. It not only gives your closet a cleaner look but also causes you not to have to search for a hanger when you are putting clothes away.
Something else I like to do is keep my socks, slips, spanks, and camisoles in my closet. This really makes it easier to get dressed with everything in the same place. Especially if I decided I don't like something and end up changing my whole outfit. I keep my socks and slips in the set of plastic drawers and I keep my camisoles in those to white drawers on the hanging shelves that you can purchase at Target.
Happy organizing!
