I promised more posts about our cruise so here we go. Day 3 of our cruise we stopped in Belize. At this port we chose to go visit some Mayan ruins close to the Guatemalan border.
We had to take a 2 hour bus ride out to the ruins so we got to see a lot of the country along the way. there were lots of children on their way to school. Some were even playing in soccer games it was really interesting to see how different things were in Belize. For example the children get over an hour for a lunch break so that they can walk home to eat and walk back. Also an education is not free in Belize every family has to pay tuition.
Below is a picture of a typical market that we passed.
We finally made it to the ruins around noon and it was already terribly hot outside. After all March and April are Belize's hottest months of the year. It was really cool getting to walk around this ancient city and learn more about the Mayan culture.
After climbing halfway up the largest structure we were able to see these carvings on the sides of the structure. It was so neat to see history up close. I ended up having to take my super cute hat off and pull my hair up because it was so hot unfortunately.
We finally made it to the top of the structure. It was really scary getting up there because there were a lot of stairs without railings on the side of the structure. The view from the top was gorgeous well worth the climb to get up there. I was so nervous taking the picture below because I had to let go of the wall and walk closer to the edge.
After leaving the ruins we were walking around the visitors area and got to see some incredible wildlife. This iguana was just chilling in this tree.
I had told my husband as we were leaving the cruise ship that morning that I really wanted to see some monkeys and I got my wish. Our guides told us that these were Howler monkeys.
We were finally fed lunch after leaving the ruins at a local restaurant. They fed us a traditional Belize lunch of chicken, a plantain and, beans and rice cooked in coconut milk. It was delicious I have never had such wonderfully flavored beans and rice.
All in all it was a great day but we were so tired by the end of the day and happy to be back on the ship to take a nap.
